A stretch of Flagler County’s coast, known as The Hammock, reaches from Marineland at the north to Flagler Beach at the south. State Road A1A provides access to the historical sites, nature preserves, residential areas and communities as well as businesses along the barrier island that separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Matanzas River, part of Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway. In addition to its beaches, The Hammock has trails for hiking and biking. The forested areas lead residents and visitors into peaceful walks where they can observe the area’s flora and fauna. Anglers, boaters and kayakers can enjoy the waterways year-round.
Several areas reflect the island’s history. Mala Compra Plantation, established in the early 1800s, belonged to Joseph Menendez, the state’s first U.S. representative. Self-guided tours of the site are available. Nestled beside the historical plantation is Bing’s Landing, a county park featuring boat ramps, fishing supplies, a barbecue restaurant and picnic area. Washington Oaks Gardens State Park preserves 425 acres of coastal scenery between the Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzas River.
Its eastern boundary offers one of the largest outcroppings of coquina rock on the Atlantic shore, and formal gardens established amid the hammock showcase blooming plants. An active friends group helps support the park.
